HUNTINGTON, WV (AP) -- The US Army Corps of Engineers has relieved the commander of its Huntington District while it investigates allegations of misconduct.

The State Journal reports that Col. Steven McGugan was relieved of his command last Friday by Brig. Gen. Margaret Burcham. She is commander of the Corps' Great Lakes and Ohio River division.

Col. David Patterson is a public affairs officer for the Corps. He confirmed that McGugan had been relieved but declined to discuss the specific allegations.

A telephone listing for McGugan could not be found in the Huntington area.

The Huntington district has more than 830 employees. The district operates and maintains 35 multi-purpose reservoirs and nine locks and dams.

The district covers 45,000 square miles in five states: West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia and North Carolina.
