Area beaches and waterways get $24.5M in federal funds

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The State Port of Wilmington, several area beaches and the Intracoastal Waterway are getting some help in the form of federal funding.

Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-7th District) says the more than $24.5 million will go to fund projects, including port dredging, waterway dredging and beach renourishment in the Army Corps of Engineers 2013 Work Plan.

"This is a great day for North Carolina's coast," McIntyre said in a news release. "Ensuring federal funds for our coastal communities is one of my highest priorities, and we are thrilled that these funds are coming home to make a difference. We will continue to fight for every penny for every pebble of sand because our coast is worth it."

Specific details of the funding in the 2013 Work Plan are:
•Wilmington Port -- $16,376,182 for Operations and Maintenance
•Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway -- $1,896,200 for Operations and Maintenance
•Cape Fear River Above Wilmington -- $488,022 for Operations and Maintenance
•Surf City and North Topsail beach - $274,450 for Investigations
•Wilmington Harbor Improvements - $49,900 for Investigations
•Brunswick County Beaches -- $5,464,050 for Construction (Ocean Isle Beach, Caswell Beach, and Holden Beach)
